Profile, Schemes and Programmes:
The recently instituted Government Medical College, Virudhunagar, located in the Collectorate Master Plan Complex, Koorakundu village, is a new jewel in the crown of Virudhunagar district. The college and hospital buildings, which sprawl over 22.4 acres and 15.07 acres respectively, have ultra modern and futuristic infrastructure built at a cost of Rs.380 crores, to cater to the needs of students and patients. As an eco friendly initiative, bio fencing with tree plantations has been executed in the entire college campus.
The Government Medical College, Virudhunagar started functioning from January 2022. College building was inaugurated by our Prime Minister of India on 13.01.2022. Sanction has been given for admission of 150 M.B.B.S students for every academic year by the National Medical Commission, New Delhi from the year 2021-2022.
During this academic year, 150 FMG trainees are undergoing (CRMI) internship training. 50 students are admitted and trained in the course of Diploma in Nursing from the Academic Year 2005-2006. Then the admission strength has been increased to 100 seats per year from the academic year 2015-2016. DMLT Courses of two years duration and One Year Paramedical Certificate Courses (Anaesthesia Technician, Orthopaedic Technician and Multi Purpose Hospital worker) were started from 2022-23.
Central library for the utilization of Doctors and students is available in college campus. 3000 Books and 40 Journals are available in this library. Recent edition text books are also available here. Four Lecture halls with 250 seating capacity, Two examination halls which can accommodate nearly 250 students, an auditorium with air-conditioning that can hold about 1000 persons and a gymnasium with modern amenities are also available for the welfare of students. Separate hostel facilities for boys, girls and training students are also provided in this institution. There are 66 Quarters in the College campus for the residence of Medical Officers and Staff of this college and hospital.
In Virudhunagar Government Medical College, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine departments are functioning. Laboratories are functioning in the departments of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Pathology. In Forensic Medicine Department, approximately 360 postmortems are performed every year.
In Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital, departments such as General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics&Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Anaesthesia, Dermatology, Respiratory Medicine, Psychiatry, Radio Diagnosis, Dentistry and Emergency Medicine are functioning.
The medical equipments such as CT Scan, Ultrasonogram, E.C.G, Holter monitor, X-Ray, Endoscopy, Mammogram, ECHO, EEG, Bronchoscope, etc,. are available in this institution. Central Laboratory and Blood Bank facilities are also available here. MRI Scan and Master Checkup are available in this Institution.
In this Medical College Hospital, Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC), Revised National Tuberculosis Control Project (RNTCP), National Leprosy Eradication Project (NLEP), Anti Retiro Viral Therapy (ART) for HIV testing, etc. are functioning. Transport facilities such as Ambulance and Mortuary Van are also readily available here. A special ward has now been set up for the patients affected by Dengue fever and qualified Medical Officers have also been entrusted with the treatment of dengue fever. A special ward has been located in the new building for various treatments under Chief Minister Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS). Transgender clinic is being conducted for the benefit of transgender people.
